PRODUCT DISCUSSION:
PhysioLogics Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) supplies 45 mg of Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) per softgel and up to 270 mg per day to help provide nutritional support for overall health and for women with PMS.* GLA is an omega-6 fatty acid that can be synthesized from Linoleic Acid in the body by the rate-limiting enzyme delta-6 desaturase. However, biological conversion is estimated to be less than 10% and is affected by several factors, including aging; intake of certain nutrients such as zinc, B6, magnesium, biotin and calcium; stress; and cholesterol levels. GLA does not have significant food sources, so supplementation may be important.
STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION:
GLA promotes cellular and metabolic health.* It is a precursor to prostaglandins, action-specific bio-molecules that regulate many important functions in cells, and provides nutritional support for women with PMS by modulating prostaglandin production.* GLA also supports the immune system and can help with dry skin.*
CLINICAL EVIDENCE:
Fourteen subjects were assessed for effects on skin health after receiving capsules of evening primrose oil containing 40 mg of gamma linolenic acid (GLA) per capsule twice per day. All subjects reported improvements in skin health, with 42.8% subjects having complete improvement in skin health. (Yoon et al, 2002)
In a preliminary clinical trial with 68 women who had a history of PMS, 500 mg of EPO taken twice daily led to an overall positive effect on PMS scores, which were based on mood, mental well-being, comfort, and fluid retention. Over 60% of the women who had poor success with PMS previously had a reported "good" response to EPO when compared to placebo. (Brush et al, 1984)
